City updates residents on $6.2 million Bridal Road rebuild; town hall set for Jan. 5

City engineering staff updated the Mission City Council on progress in the $6,200,000 Bridal Road reconstruction project, reporting the schedule was accelerated by closing the road to traffic and by adding crews and weekend work.

"We decided to close Bridal Road completely so we can expedite this project within 12 months," said the project presenter, noting excavation work will start during the Christmas break and that the contractor expects to finish key excavation work during the three-week school break beginning Dec. 19. The contractor and the city's engineer — identified in the presentation as Javier Bento of Venser Construction and Javier Hinojosa of Hinojosa Engineering — showed drone footage and photos of current work.

Staff said outreach to adjacent residents has included door-to-door delivery of bilingual letters and updates posted on the city's 311 app. The presentation described heavy equipment currently on site, including excavators, a paver and rollers, and work on sidewalks, curb-and-gutter, subgrade excavation and water line extensions to 22nd Street.

Council members asked about retaining walls and impacts to homeowners. The presenter said retaining walls were installed to reduce steep slopes and that contractors had relocated sprinkler and landscape systems on some properties to make yards flush with the sidewalks. "We made it flush to their yard and also the contractor took it upon their self to relocate their sprinkler system, their landscape system," the presenter said.

The city announced a town hall on the project for Jan. 5 at 5:30 p.m. in City Hall chambers to provide further information to residents. Staff said the full closure and added crews are intended to shorten the work window and reduce traffic impacts on nearby intersections when complete.

No vote was required; the update was provided as part of staff reports and council questions.
