Crafton Borough Council adopts major zoning code rewrite

Crafton Borough Council adopted Ordinance No. 16-82 on Dec. 15, approving a comprehensive update to Chapter 225 of the borough code that governs zoning and land use.
The ordinance, presented by municipal staff, restates and revises zoning regulations that officials said had not been substantially updated in roughly 20 years. Council members and staff emphasized the length of the review process: "This process has been going on for over 3 years, and we've had engagement sessions with residents," the manager said during deliberations.
Planning commissioners and a volunteer steering committee reviewed the draft and made multiple revisions, officials said. A councilor who read the document described it as "a significant improvement" after comparing the new code to the earlier version.
Resident Greg Wozniak, who addressed council during public comment, asked members to "take what I had given you in deep consideration" regarding Belvedere Street zoning—an issue the ordinance encompasses. Council members said the county and legal staff also reviewed the draft.
After brief remarks and expressions of thanks to the steering committee and planning commission, the chair called for a vote. The chair announced, "Zoning passes." Council did not record a roll-call vote count in the meeting audio.
The borough indicated it will transmit the adopted ordinance to the county and post implementation details online. A resident requested a step-by-step explanation of when the ordinance becomes effective; staff said they would provide that information publicly.
