Students showcase DHS Shredders and district honors; cross-country team and students of the month recognized

Dixon High School’s life-skills 'DHS Shredders' program demonstrated products and sales operations; the board also honored the boys cross-country state champions and named students of the month from Reagan Middle School and Dixon High School.
Several student programs and awards were on the Dixon Board of Education agenda on Nov. 19.
DHS life-skills and transitions teacher Natalie Gordon and students presented 'DHS Shredders,' a classroom business that collects paper, pulps it and makes products including fire starters, fire bricks and seasonal paper-clay items. Gordon described the program’s low start-up costs (under $100), donated supplies (5-gallon buckets, wax/candle donations), collection schedule and sales logistics (two fire starters for $3, checks/cash only). Students demonstrated product preparation and explained drying and packaging timelines: bricks typically dry about a week. The program has sold roughly $400 in bricks to date and plans craft kits and expanded district collaborations for recycling and cross-building experiences.
The board also honored the boys cross-country team for winning the state championship — coach Simon Thorpe presented the roster and individual results, noting personal-best times and All-State placements. Thorpe said this is the second boys state championship in school history.
Principal Jared Shaner presented student-of-the-month recognitions: Danny (Danila) Lovett (October) described her CEO class business and entrepreneurship project; Jaden Thomas (November) spoke about coursework and post-graduation plans. Reagan Middle School’s November students of the month, Griffin Ardini and Grace Conner, were also introduced and spoke briefly about activities and school involvement.
Board members praised the students and staff, asked about ordering and pickup for DHS Shredders products, and encouraged cross-collaboration across buildings and with community partners.
