Prince George's County Board of Education votes to close Dec. 1 meeting for legal, personnel and budget matters

Brandon Jackson, chairman of the Prince George's County Board of Education, announced at 5:11 p.m. on Dec. 1, 2025, that the board would close its public business meeting and move into a closed session. He said the closure was being made under provisions of the Maryland Open Meetings Act to allow discussion of administrative, legal and personnel matters before information is finalized.
"This meeting will now be closed to discuss the following matters as permitted under the general provision article 3 dash 3 0 5 b 1 2 5 7 8 12 13 and 14 of the Maryland Open Meetings Act," Jackson read aloud, listing updates on central office administration; consultation with the Parent Committee Advisory Council; superintendent-evaluation tools; the superintendent's report and budget update; PGCPS legal matters including an update on SPIRE/Excel; and personnel matters, including appointment and staffing decisions. Jackson said publicly disclosing information before it is finalized "may result in lawsuits and fines."
Miss McMillan conducted a roll-call vote on the question "Shall the Prince George's County Board of Education close the 12/01/2025 board meeting?" Multiple board members responded "Aye," and the clerk announced that there were seven votes in the affirmative. Jackson then stated the motion to close the meeting was adopted and instructed staff to pause the public recording as the board moved into closed session.
The board did not state a mover or seconder for the motion on the public record. The minutes and any formal decisions made in closed session will be subject to the board's rules for releasing information consistent with state law. The public portion of the meeting ended with the board recessing and preparing to discuss the listed items in executive session.
