Owner says Placa Center will expand into multiuse community venue in Struthers

Bill Placa, owner of Placa Center, told the Struthers City Council he is expanding the building into a multiuse community venue that will host events, services and small businesses.
Placa said the renovated space will accommodate "five or ten different things" instead of one single use, naming a dining hall, space for weddings and theater, a daycare, and a training partner called Help Me Care. "They train SDNA nurses," Placa said, using the term he provided for that training program. He also listed an accounting-related business, a candle maker and an infrared body-wrap company among current occupants.
The plan, Placa said, builds on activity the center has already hosted. "We've had a craft show. We had an outdoor flea market so far. We've done a couple of weddings, dozen or so birthday parties for kids and adults," he said, noting the center will host a larger Christmas craft show he expects will be "probably twice the size" of the prior event. Placa said the Christmas tree event will feature decorated trees with donations that will go to families in the city.
Placa framed the project as a local investment. "I live here. My kids went to school here. My grandkids are in school here. And I've been here at least 25 years or so," he said, describing the expansion as a way to support the neighborhood and make use of every space in the building.
He said the center plans to begin offering free meals and to make smaller venue spaces available to outside users in the area. "We're gonna start doing free meals here as well," Placa said, adding that the center currently shares updates on Facebook under "Placa Center" and expects to launch a website at the start of the coming year.
