A trustee said, "in a district where we are lacking teachers... we're using money like it's pocket change," urging that hiring teachers be the top priority. Administration responded that the stipend compensates staff for additional duties while the district lacks a director of career and technical education and that the stipend is significantly less than hiring a full director. The administration stated the director position salary would be about $200,000 and the prorated stipend value is $15,000 — described in the meeting as approximately $185,000 less than the full director salary.
District officials said stipends are temporary and intended to ensure planning continues so the CTE center opens on schedule. Trustees asked for public explanations of the specific duties tied to the stipend; the superintendent agreed to make those descriptions public.
The board moved and seconded item 9.15 and later approved it by roll-call vote. Item 9.16 approving Patricia McCabe's tenure was also moved, seconded and approved during the HR segment.
