The Fort Thomas Board of Adjustment approved a conditional‑use permit allowing Highland Country Club to relocate and replace its sign closer to Alexandria Pike.
Planner Mr. Stewart explained that because the country club is a conditional use in the zone, exterior changes such as a relocated sign require board approval. Brian Schneider, representing Highland Country Club, said the existing sign is no longer on club property after a parcel sale and that moving the sign near the road will help guests find the club. Schneider described the proposed sign as a stone‑faced wall approximately 15 feet long and 4 feet high with landscaping; the club said the physical sign panel would be smaller than the existing structure. The club also proposed low landscape lighting to shine on the sign rather than internal LED illumination.
Board members asked whether the structure or only the sign face counts toward sign area; Mr. Stewart said the sign area is the physical sign element, not the landscape wall behind it. The board discussed lighting glare concerns and Stewart said lighting must not glare onto the street or adjoining property and that low accent lights could meet that requirement.
A board member moved to approve the conditional‑use permit based on evidence presented, finding the relocation and new sign would contribute to the neighborhood and would not be detrimental to health, safety or welfare if built as proposed. The motion passed on roll call and the board instructed the applicant to coordinate next steps with Mr. Stewart.
