Atascosa County accepts $50,100 ACOG equipment for regional radio interoperability

Atascosa County accepted a $50,100 equipment grant from the Alamo Area Council of Governments (ACOG) for the Alamo Area Radio Interoperability Network, emergency management staff told the commissioners.
"I recommend that the court accept the grant equipment in the amount of $50,100," Mike Ponza, the county's emergency management coordinator, said. He told commissioners the equipment is resilient but that the county will be responsible if items are lost, stolen, damaged or malfunction, and that additional software or updates might be needed to integrate the new radios with the sheriff's current systems.
Ponza said the interoperable radios help mutual-aid responses, allowing responders from other areas to communicate directly with local radio systems. Commissioners moved and approved accepting the equipment; staff noted future budget items may be needed to buy software or services that make the new gear work with the sheriff's systems.
The acceptance includes no county match payment for the initial equipment cost, but Ponza advised that software licensing or system updates to make the equipment fully operational with existing infrastructure could require additional funding later.
The court's action authorizes acceptance of the donated equipment and places responsibility for upkeep and any integration costs with the county agencies that will operate the gear.
