Summary
After a presentation from a Leadership Marshfield member, the Board of Public Works approved installation of a South Side "Welcome to Marshfield" sign at a Central/Maple island; proponents estimate ~$50,000 and said the city would assume maintenance and lighting costs.
The Marshfield Board of Public Works voted to approve installation of a South Side "Welcome to Marshfield" gateway sign following public comment and a staff recommendation.
Josh Colby, who identified himself as a member of the Leadership Marshfield cohort, told the board the project will complete an original four-sign plan and asked the city to approve construction of a sign at the island where Central and Maypole (Central and Maple were both mentioned in discussion) converge. "Our working estimate for the project is about $50,000 for the installation," Colby said, adding that Stratford Sign Company quoted roughly $44,000 and advised a $5,000–$6,000 contingency. He said the completed sign would become city property and asked the city to assume maintenance, including about $25 a month for lighting.
City staff recommended approving the proposed location on public property and the donation request, citing municipal code 2403A3, which requires Board of Public Works approval for permanent community information signs. A staff presenter explained the recommended site offers the best visibility and lowest added infrastructure investment compared with other candidate corners.
Board members asked logistical questions about visibility and long‑term power. One board member suggested looking into solar power for the fixture; staff said the leadership team had not looked into solar and that sign placement and exact siting remain under refinement.
A motion to approve the installation and donate the sign to the city carried on a voice vote. The board directed staff to proceed with the recommended location and donation process and to coordinate the necessary municipal approvals and installation details. The item will be referred as appropriate to other city processes for permits and final siting.
