Christian County commissioners cut requested funding for Show Me Christian County to $40,000 amid budget squeeze

Show Me Christian County representatives presented accomplishments, economic metrics and a request for continued county investment during the Dec. 4 county commission meeting. Commissioners, citing constrained county finances and multi-year sales-tax trends, voted to allocate $40,000 for the organization in the coming year.

"With just 3 projects that are underway right now, we've had $82,000,000 in capital investment from those 3 projects and 96 jobs that are created," said Kristen, a representative of Show Me Christian County, while summarizing the group's recent work and grant assistance efforts. Speakers from the private sector, including donor partners and business leaders, described local hiring and private investment tied to Show Me's efforts.

Several commissioners praised the organization’s results but warned that county revenues are under pressure. Presiding Commissioner Lee Horton said the question was not the group's value but the county’s fiscal constraints: "This decision that we're gonna make has nothing to do with the value you bring…If the decisions that we're just beginning to make for '26 will affect '27-'28." Commissioner Bradley Jackson moved to fund the organization at $40,000 for next year; the motion was seconded and passed by voice vote.

Kristen and supporters said they will use the county funding toward business recruitment, advocacy for infrastructure projects, and tourism efforts such as the Explore Christian County initiative. Commissioners encouraged Show Me leaders to pursue matching funds from school districts and municipalities and noted staff will continue to evaluate budget options.

Next steps: the $40,000 allocation will be reflected in the county's 2026 budget process and communicated to Show Me Christian County for planning purposes.
