Commission sets 2026 priorities: EV planning, spring tree planting and comprehensive-plan input

The La Porte Sustainability Commission framed its 2026 priorities around three main goals: develop an EV-charging plan to integrate into long-term asset management, complete a spring tree-planting initiative and revise the commission’s sustainability report for potential council review and inclusion in the city’s comprehensive plan.

Staff said the tree-planting program will proceed in spring after weather allows, that funds for the effort are appropriated and that the city’s arborist plan is ready pending final signoff: “The funds are appropriated for it … I want Nick to sign off on the final plan,” the staff speaker said. Commissioners noted that flowering trees often perform better when planted in spring rather than fall.

On the comprehensive plan, staff described the document as the city’s 20-year steering document and urged the commission to prepare succinct, implementable suggestions for integration into transportation and zoning updates currently underway: “A comprehensive plan is essentially like a steering document for the city for the next 20 years,” staff said. Commissioners emphasized the need to pare the sustainability guidance down to achievable short- and long-term items and to make the document easy for other departments and the public to use.

The commission agreed to dedicate upcoming meetings to goal-setting and to invite planning and utilities staff to present updates so commissioners can finalize objectives and implementation steps early in the year. No formal vote was required to adopt the discussed goals at this meeting.
