Councilor Shannon Hume used her final Town Council meeting on Dec. 2 to reflect on 18 years of local public service and to thank peers, staff, mayors and her family for their support.
"It's truly been an honor," Hume said as she listed her service on the school committee, the town council, the school building committee, the charter review committee and the Braintree Community Partnership on substance use. She told the council she was proud to have been the town’s first female councilor and later its first female council president.
Councilors responded with personal recollections and formal thanks. President Ryan recounted working with Hume since their early campaigns and praised her leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic. Councilor Baraka said Hume had “blazed the path for others to follow,” and Councilor Flaherty credited Hume with helping the council adapt to unprecedented circumstances. Several other members noted Hume’s deep institutional knowledge and commitment to the schools.
Hume said she looked forward to incoming councilors Ryan Sterling and Jimmy Diutti taking office in January and thanked town staff and volunteers for their service. The council presented Hume with a commemorative item and members and family were invited to join the presentation at the front of the chamber.
The meeting proceeded afterward to the evening’s business.
