Richmond Memorial Library reports boiler replacement, $35,000 grant and plans for a 'library of things'

Samantha Strykers, director of the Richmond Memorial Library, updated the Batavia City School District Board of Education on building and program projects tied to the district-owned library facility.
Strykers said the library completed an emergency boiler installation and is working with the district and architects on a pending New York State construction grant application through the Department of Library Development to renovate lower-level restrooms and improve accessibility in a designated area of refuge.
She also announced the library received a $35,000 grant from the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation targeted toward after-school and parks-and-trails programming. The library will use the funds to start a "library of things" — lending nonbook items such as sports equipment, games, telescopes and non-powered gardening tools — and will weatherize an existing carriage-house outbuilding so items can be stored there.
Strykers thanked district staff who assisted with the expedited boiler work and the grant process. She said the library and the district coordinate closely on after-school behavior and that communications with school staff and the school resource officer have reduced problems the library saw in the past.
Board members commended the library’s leadership and the improved collaboration with school staff. Strykers said details of the library-of-things circulation policies and holds process are still being developed.
