Port Washington adopts ordinance to create Union Cemetery board

The Port Washington Common Council adopted Ordinance 2025-32 on Dec. 16 to create a cemetery board to oversee the Union Cemetery.
The city attorney summarized the ordinance and said it outlines how the cemetery board will be appointed and operate; because the city is still working with the cemetery association, the city will not own the cemetery at adoption. The ordinance had a first reading in December and was moved, seconded and adopted by voice vote during the meeting. The city attorney said, if adopted, the ordinance would be effective upon publication.
Council members noted widespread public concern about the cemetery’s future and thanked staff for their work on the ordinance.
The council did not discuss additional cemetery-related budget items during the meeting; the city said it will continue negotiations with the cemetery association and publish details online.
