Commissioners endorse up to $16 million borrowing plan for 2026; reappoint deputy treasurer

Treasurer Mike presented the county’s annual borrowing plan and asked commissioners to endorse a request to the delegation’s executive committee to borrow in anticipation of taxes for 2026. He said the likely borrowing amount is $16,000,000 (the same as the prior year) and warned borrowing costs may be slightly higher; the finance director, Lori Sharp, provided historical borrowing records to inform the recommendation.
A motion to authorize the treasurer to pursue borrowing up to $16,000,000 was moved and seconded and carried after recorded 'Aye' responses. The treasurer said he expects to present to the executive committee in early February and asked the board for a timely endorsement so the process can begin.
The board also reappointed Carmen (deputy treasurer) to serve another year; the treasurer described the deputy’s role as primarily attending the delegation’s executive committee meeting in person when the treasurer cannot be physically present. The motion to reappoint was moved, seconded and carried.
The treasury’s recommended borrowing will be taken to the delegation’s executive committee for final authorization; county staff said the request is being built into next year’s budget assumptions.
