The Buncombe County Board of Elections moved 25 voter challenges from preliminary review to full evidentiary hearings on Jan. 6 after staff said the filings met procedural requirements and there was probable cause to investigate further.
Corinne, the board’s executive director, described the two‑step challenge process and said the preliminary hearing is a lower bar than the full evidentiary hearing: “These are the same types of challenges that you’ve seen in the past… and they appear to be filed properly,” she said. Staff asked board members to review the filings in teams; members examined name/address mismatches and alias notations and flagged a subset that may be typographical or address‑formatting errors.
After discussion, a board member moved and the board voted to advance all 25 challenges to the full hearing scheduled for Jan. 6 so staff can research the claims further. Staff will run background checks, compare registration records and prepare evidence for the next meeting, and the board will consider whether there is sufficient evidence to proceed to formal hearings under the statutory standard.
