Wappingers board hears update to districtwide safety plan adding AED drills and staffing requirements

The Wappingers Central School District Board of Education opened a public hearing Dec. 15 on revisions to the districtwide school safety plan that incorporate cardiac emergency-response requirements under Ed Law 2801. The changes call for a minimum of five trained responders — or 10% of building staff — who can perform CPR, retrieve an AED, call 911 and liaise with emergency medical services.
Assistant Superintendent Doctor Wilson told the board the plan requires that all AEDs be readily retrievable and that “a deployment of an AED must be able to be done within 3 minutes to any area on campus.” The draft also adds an annual AED CERP drill (cardiac emergency response drill) to time retrieval and simulate CPR protocols, and it directs human resources to maintain records of staff training while facilities must ensure AED maintenance and charged batteries.
The update would require the district to coordinate with local EMS providers on site orientation and AED locations. Doctor Wilson said the district has ordered additional AEDs and that building-level safety plans will operationalize the districtwide requirements.
Board members solicited public comment during the required hearing window; none was offered. The board then voted to close the public hearing and resumed regular business. The hearing record was posted for public comment through the publication deadline stated by the administration.
