Tracy Taylor elected Auburn deputy mayor in 4-3 council vote after competing nominations

Tracy Taylor was elected deputy mayor of Auburn for 2026 by the City Council on Dec. 1, 2025, winning a 4-3 hand count over incumbent Deputy Mayor Cheryl Raikes.

The council opened nominations under its Rules of Procedure. Council member Sturgis nominated Taylor, who accepted and described the deputy mayor role as “an opportunity to help strengthen teamwork, support each council member and ensure that we continue moving forward together.” Deputy Mayor Raikes was nominated for a second term by Council member Traut Manuel; Raikes said serving had been “an honor and a responsibility I take seriously” and urged the council to put aside divisions in service of residents.

Council discussion before the vote focused on the skills the deputy mayor must demonstrate, including readiness to lead in an emergency, the ability to work with the mayor and staff, and a willingness to convene and listen. Council member Clinton Taylor said the deputy mayor must be prepared to step in to lead the city if needed. Council member Sturgis, who nominated Taylor, cited municipal leadership experience and consistent preparedness as reasons to support her. Traut Manuel and Baldwin delivered the strongest public endorsements for Raikes, noting her community ties and efforts to meet with colleagues.

The council conducted a counted vote by show of hands. The mayor announced the result: four votes for Council member Tracy Taylor, three for Deputy Mayor Cheryl Raikes. The mayor thanked Raikes publicly for her service; Taylor will serve as deputy mayor for a one-year term beginning in 2026.

The council moved on to its next agenda items after the vote.
