Scores of residents told the Temple Terrace City Council on Dec. 16 that the city’s holiday decorations this season were a disappointment and that brighter displays and community events would help bring people downtown.
Speakers including Lucas Hutchins and Karen Wall said 56th Street and other public corridors lacked the pole-mounted lights and decorations residents remembered. Hutchins described the local display as "depressing" and urged the city to revive parades, tree lightings and pole-mounted decorations. Wall, a longtime resident, suggested the Centennial celebration had absorbed funds normally used for seasonal displays and pressed the council for a clear explanation.
City Manager explained logistical constraints — including prior changes in utility pole policies — and said the administration had added wreaths and the recent Winter Wonderland event but would review options. Council members acknowledged public frustration and debated whether action should be incremental this season or planned for 2026.
Councilmember Kravitz moved, and the council seconded, a directive asking the city manager to explore increasing holiday lighting and decorations for 2026, including a staff report within six months. The motion passed after brief debate; one council member objected to what they called micromanagement of staff but agreed the staff had been asked to return with proposals. Council liaison and staff said any remaining Centennial funds would be reconciled before year-end and that unspent funds ordinarily roll back to the general fund.
The directive does not appropriate funds immediately; it asks staff to develop options — including inventory, cost estimates and potential installation plans — for council consideration during goal setting and budget planning.
Going forward, the council asked staff to inventory existing decorations, assess what is serviceable, estimate costs for additions or replacements, and present recommendations that could be included in FY2026–27 planning and budgeting.
