Commissioners weigh restoring historic courtroom ceiling versus budget and AV constraints

A participant representing the historical society and a commissioner said a contractor estimated $37,500 to repair molding and make the original tall courtroom ceiling paintable. Richard McKnight and others discussed the potential for donor funding through the historical society, which could accept tax-deductible contributions to help cover the work. "If we are gonna raise the money, the money would be given to the historical society, which would make it a tax deductible contribution," McKnight said.
Staff and commissioners raised practical concerns: the county already ordered special tile for the planned drop ceiling, and the AV engineering team indicated the drop ceiling height variance affected speaker clearances. An AV staffer said engineers would need to confirm whether equipment could be accommodated if the county drywalled above the existing structure; recessed speaker placement or a custom box were among possible solutions.
Commissioners asked facilities staff and Jeff to provide drywall cost estimates, consult with the AV engineer about equipment clearance and determine return/credit options for the tile order. No formal appropriation or change to the contract was made at the meeting; the board asked staff to return with estimates and technical analysis.
