Board approves sending Flossmoor Hills envelope remediation to bid after engineer presentation

The Flossmoor School District 161 Board of Education voted Dec. 15 to send a proposed scope of work for the Flossmoor Hills building-envelope remediation out for competitive bids after hearing engineering recommendations from Wold.
Mike Eichhorn of Wold described three construction conditions across the Flossmoor Hills building tied to original 1960s construction, a 1966 addition and a 2001 addition. He said the recommended corrective approach is to seal exterior sheathing, install prefabricated exterior wall panels (Hunter board) from the outside, replace soffits where needed and then re-test building pressurization. The work is intended to stop humid air infiltration that has driven indoor humidity and related issues. "We are confident that this will address and solve the issue," Eichhorn said during the presentation.
Board members asked about confidence, the existence of pressurization testing and how contractors would stage the work to minimize disruption to students; staff said Pepper Construction has reviewed the approach and that bids would be solicited with work to begin after board approval of the contract in January.
On a roll-call vote the board approved placing the Flossmoor Hills envelope remediation out to bid as proposed by Wold and the engineers. Administration said it will return to the board in January with bid results and recommended contract actions.
What happens next: Staff will advertise the work, collect contractor bids and present recommended awards to the board in January; the district plans to coordinate construction phasing to limit disruption to students.
