Kaneland board reviews 2026–27 draft calendar tied to construction schedule; administration outlines construction plans

Kaneland CUSD 302 administration on Oct. 27 presented a draft 2026–27 school calendar and a construction planning update, asking the board for feedback as the district balances instructional schedules and major facility work at the high school.

Superintendent Dr. Rolling said the draft calendar reflects heavy construction planned for summer 2027 and recommended staff start Aug. 10 with students beginning Aug. 12 for 2026–27; winter break would run Dec. 19–Jan. 3 and spring break Mar. 27–Apr. 4. The administration proposed converting certain SIP/institute days and scheduling student attendance on Good Friday (Mar. 26) as an early release to avoid awkward scheduling later in the week.

Board members raised concerns about early-dismissal times and the effect of an early start on families’ childcare, extracurricular calendars and community programs. Rolling cautioned that moving next year’s start later would risk construction timelines and extracurricular scheduling; he suggested a broader philosophical calendar conversation for 2028–29 when construction is not the driver.

On facilities, Rolling said architects are transferring planning into CAD renderings and user-group meetings are proceeding; playground options and classroom furniture subgroups are meeting and the steering committee is evaluating scope for 2026 work. He said construction activities are planned to begin the afternoon of May 18 and be in full swing by May 19 next summer to allow crews to work through the summer window.

No action was taken; staff will return with revised calendar options after gathering additional feedback from parents and staff.
