Mayor highlights workforce training, holiday events and new community services

At the start of the Garfield Heights City Council meeting the mayor reported on community outreach and workforce efforts tied to regional construction and local programs.
The mayor said he visited eighth graders at Garfield Heights Middle School to promote an effective leadership academy and urged young people to consider trades training. He highlighted a recent resource fair that involved Cuyahoga County, Gilbane Design Build, the Urban League of Cleveland and local labor unions, and framed those partnerships as pathways to jobs created by upcoming projects such as the county's Central Services campus and a regional stadium and airport renovation.
The mayor also said he is working with the newly created Cuyahoga County Freshwater Institute to offer swim lessons and lifeguard certification to help address seasonal staffing shortages at the city pool. "We struggle to find lifeguards for our pool," he said, and described efforts to certify local students so they can work when pools open.
He announced the city's holiday lighting ceremony will begin at 5 p.m. with a performance by the Saint Monica Catholic Church Choir and community activities, and reminded residents about food pantry information available through 211 and the city's website. He also thanked city staff for holiday decorations in council chambers and urged residents to attend upcoming Ward events and community giveaways announced by council members.
Council members followed with brief ward reports that included community food distributions, a Thanksgiving meal list and outreach events run by local churches and schools. There were no citizen comments during the public comment period.
The meeting moved on to ordinances and the council later adjourned.
