Council hears wastewater-plant repair update; local fix cut cost from ~$80,000 to about $2,000
Summary
City officials reported progress at the wastewater plant (aerator motor delivered; sludge‑press repairs needed) and that a planned gearbox replacement was sourced locally at roughly $2,000 versus a prior estimate near $80,000; the council was also told a recently received grant will help cover water-main and service-line break costs.

Mount Carmel officials told the council the wastewater treatment plant has received a new aerator motor and that installation is underway. The city also reported recurring issues with a sludge press belt and a broken guide, which were being repaired as part of routine maintenance.
Officials said a previously tabled gearbox replacement for an important screw/drive component was re-evaluated and that a local vendor (B and G Machine, as reported) could supply and fit the replacement at a much lower cost. The council was told the local approach reduced the estimated repair cost sharply—an earlier figure of about $80,000 was compared with a local-sourcing outcome near $2,000.
Separately, staff announced the city had received a grant that will help cover costs associated with water-main breaks and service-line repairs. City water samples and the return to service of well No. 2 were also reported as acceptable during routine oversight checks.
No formal procurement or contract award for the larger replacements was approved at the meeting; staff presented the operational status and financial context for council information.
