Mr. Lifton, chair of the negotiating committee, told the board the committee held its first negotiating session with the Metuchen Education Association on the previous day and described the meeting as collegial and collaborative.
Lifton said all bargaining-unit contracts in the district expire July 1 and that, while negotiations can be adversarial, the board values its long history of successful bargaining and aims to reach a fair agreement before the contract expiration. He also said negotiation discussions prior to final agreement are confidential and that the committee will provide limited public updates while talks continue.
Board members thanked Lifton for the update and noted the committee's work will continue; several members praised the district's negotiation history and expressed confidence in reaching an agreement.
