Chair, Rochester Park County tourism commission (speaker 8) used the public comment period to request maintenance at a county-owned property containing a historic Civil War fort and trail.
"Our director, Jill Hamlin, has sent some emails to the judge and the county officials about trail conditions and the possible liability issues for the county," the chair said, describing recent visits and what she observed: eroded waterway diversions, a ditched section needing gravel, two stolen wooden benches and a restroom that likely needs pumping.
The commission chair emphasized visitation and educational value, saying the site draws visitors from "all 50 states and several, foreign countries over the years." She asked the court to consider placing gravel in drainage areas and replacing benches and said the commission would help coordinate work with the landowner's permission.
Court members responded with available resources and history of past maintenance. Speaker 4 noted prior work done four to five years earlier and said there are remaining gravel funds that could be used for spreading and hauling material. Speaker 2 and others acknowledged coordination possibilities and indicated staff would follow up on parking, trash pickup, and potential use of county equipment to spread gravel.
The public comment concluded with court members thanking the speaker and noting the court's willingness to pursue maintenance options and follow up with the tourism commission.
