Perry sets annual cap on OMPA 'Ways I Save' rebates to limit large payouts

The council voted to set an annual rebate cap for the city’s participation in OMPA’s Ways I Save electricity rebate program. Staff told the council the city pays half of the program rebate and that OMPA recommended an annual cap because recent applications elsewhere have generated very large individual payouts, including one cited in the meeting of about $40,000 for geothermal work.
Nate explained that staff recommend limits that mirror other OMPA cities so the city’s portion of rebates does not exceed budget expectations. Staff said recent years typically cost roughly $10,000 annually based on historical payments and that residential rebates have been small, but the potential for a single large commercial rebate — particularly with new industrial projects — prompted the recommendation.
Council moved and approved the cap on the city’s rebate contributions (roll call recorded). Staff said once the cap fund for the year is exhausted, no further rebates will be available until the next year.
