Sheriff says new inmate monitors will alert staff to falls, self-harm; commissioners approve Cell Guardian agreement

Tippecanoe County commissioners approved a service agreement Dec. 15 to install Cell Guardian monitoring units in certain jail cells to help detect falls, abnormal vitals or potential self-harm.
Sheriff Goldsmith told the board the units monitor breathing, heart rate and body temperature and can alert staff to falls or attempts at self-harm. The plan is to install monitors in detox cells and some additional cells as needed, with initial units located in central and medical areas so medical staff can set monitoring parameters.
A commissioner moved to approve the Cell Guardian service agreement, which the board approved by voice vote. The motion description in the meeting noted unit costs of $500 each for 10 units to be installed and an annual service fee of $14,280.
