RIALTO, Calif. — The Rialto City Council unanimously approved acceptance of a $3.9 million Safe Routes to School grant on Tuesday, authorizing staff to move forward with pedestrian and bicycle safety upgrades at seven local schools.
Public Works Director Yaz Amrani told the council the project will deliver enhanced pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure for the seven schools identified in the staff report. "We were approved for safe routes to school in the amount of $3.9 million," Amrani said, and recommended the council receive and accept the grant.
Councilmember Carla Perez moved to accept the grant and direct staff to proceed; Mayor Pro Tem Ed Scott seconded the motion and it passed by unanimous voice vote. Council members asked staff to monitor a recently signed state bill that also funds safe routes for seniors and to coordinate with lobbyists and regional partners on related opportunities.
The funding is intended to improve infrastructure around the identified schools and promote walking and biking safety. Staff will return with implementation steps, design and timeline details as the project moves into the grant‑administration phase.
