Students from Roundstone Elementary showcase leadership program at Rockcastle board meeting
Summary
Students and staff from Roundstone Elementary described 'NEST Fest' and the 'Leader in Me' program; school leaders said the initiatives are boosting student confidence, encouraging goal-setting, and supporting a push to raise the school's accountability index.
At the Rockcastle County Board of Education's regular meeting, Roundstone Elementary staff and students presented the school's leadership program, 'Leader in Me,' and explained 'NEST Fest,' an all-school rally that recognizes student leaders and rewards positive behavior.
Mister Dustin Reynolds, who introduced the students, said the program teaches seven leadership habits and is helping students "be more confident, responsible, and respectful." Fourth grader Emma Hacker told trustees that Leader in Me helps students learn the seven habits, including "be proactive" and "seek to understand before being understood."
Reynolds outlined classroom and schoolwide strategies tied to the initiative: individual goal-setting with third and fifth graders, PBIS incentives (called Eagle Bucks), diagnostic testing to track growth, and monthly clarity coaching from an external consultant. He said the school is five index points from reaching a 'green' accountability rating and identified targeted interventions and incentives to close that gap.
Board members praised the presentation and thanked the students for attending. The showcase was presented during the agenda's community and school showcase section; the board did not take formal action related to the presentation.
The board's attention to the school's instructional clarity and student leadership program follows districtwide discussion of assessment data and school climate elsewhere on the agenda.
