Guymon council honors Kindest Kid, awards small tourism grants and reappoints boards

During its Dec. 9 meeting the Guymon City Council presented a proclamation recognizing Sofia Christina Alvidrez, a second‑grade student at Prairie Elementary School, for being named Oklahoma’s Kindest Kid in America and invited family members for a photograph with the council.
On economic development measures, the council approved three Visit/Convention Tourism (VIG) grant awards recommended by the Tourism Board: $5,000 to 3 RECS LLC for exterior painting and awning replacement (total project $11,031.23), $5,000 to Advanced Water Solutions LLC to remove and replace hazardous concrete in a parking lot (project cost $16,252.35), and $3,206.98 to Life’s Plan Physical Therapy for storefront repairs (project cost $6,413.95). Each award was moved, seconded and approved by the council following Tourism Board recommendations.
Council also considered appointments and reappointments to multiple boards and commissions whose terms expired Dec. 31, 2025, approving reappointments and accepting new applicants (library board, cemetery board, tourism board, parks, and others). Council members acknowledged the Arts & Humanities Board has been largely inactive; public comment earlier in the meeting urged the council to keep that board active and not dissolve it. The mayor and staff said the arts board remains funded in the adopted budget and suggested working with interested volunteers to resurrect the board.
Separately, staff reported on a Small Business Saturday giveaway and upcoming community events and submitted the Guymon Chamber of Commerce monthly report for council review.
