Residents raise deer overpopulation and feeding concerns at Logansport council meeting

During the public-comment period at the Dec. 15 Logansport Common Council meeting an audience member (recorded as Speaker 9) described repeated problems with white-tailed deer entering residential yards, damaging fences and landscaping, and suggested the city consider outreach and possible coordinated closed hunts with the county.
The speaker said constituents near 2715 East Bridal had reported deer crossing Market Street and suggested posting warnings and discouraging resident feeding, noting that bird feeders and other involuntary food sources draw deer into yards. The speaker also recounted a discussion with the DNR biologist, who recommended caution around shooting within city limits and described closed hunts in parks as a tool used elsewhere.
Mayor Chris Martin said he would contact mayors in comparable cities to see what approaches they have used and that he had already discussed deer issues with local public-safety and DNR contacts. Council members noted that enforcement or a feeding prohibition would be difficult and suggested outreach, public notices and coordinated county action as initial steps.
No formal action was taken during the meeting; council members asked staff to collect information and report back.
