The recognition came at the start of the board’s meeting, where members credited Smith with helping advance Riverside Park improvements — including pickleball courts, a fitness court and basketball — new playgrounds at Fairview, Veil House and Spencer parks, upgraded shelters and renovations at the McCaleb facility. Board members also cited the adoption of the department’s 2024 master plan and plans to implement an ADA manual derived from it.
Speaking to the board, Smith reflected on his time with the parks board, recalling early projects such as the dog park and thanking staff and volunteers. He urged future board leadership to “ignore social media” and let residents voice complaints while continuing to pursue the broader community vision. He also acknowledged contributions from staff members named during the meeting and from partners including the Cass County Community Foundation and local school corporations.
Board members presented Smith with a gift and offered personal remarks. The meeting later moved on to operational updates and staff reports.
