The Southern York County School District board on Dec. 4 discussed potential steps for selling roughly 200 acres of district-owned land near New Freedom in Trewsbury Township but did not vote to sell.
Administration said attorneys reviewed documents and indicated no apparent restrictions that would bar a sale but recommended a full title search and appraisal. The property is leased to a farmer, producing roughly $40,000–$60,000 annually in lease income; that lease reportedly has about two years remaining. Board members noted the district purchased the land around 2004 and that funds from any sale would be limited to debt service or capital expenditures under applicable rules.
Directors urged a cautious approach: suggested next steps include a title search, appraisal, inquiry with township and borough officials about potential rezoning, and a review of whether proceeds could meaningfully address budget needs. Several members said an appraisal should reveal development feasibility and value, and one director suggested township/zoning conversations be done before spending on appraisal. The board agreed to place an action item on the January agenda to authorize initial due diligence steps; no appraisal contract or sale authorization was approved at the Dec. 4 meeting.
Board members also flagged potential constraints (possible historical transfer conditions or clawback) and the need to coordinate with the current leaseholder if sale steps proceed.
