MPS committee approves Education for Employment plan to expand career planning

The Milwaukee Public Schools committee voted to approve the district’s Education for Employment (E4E) plan after a presentation from district staff and a short board discussion.
The administration framed E4E as the district’s implementation of state law PI 26, which requires academic and career planning services for students. “Education for employment, also known as PI 26, is Wisconsin’s legislation requiring districts to provide academic and career planning services,” Ophelia King, manager of school counseling, told the committee during the presentation.
The plan centers on Academic and Career Planning (ACP) delivered through the Xello platform, student conferences, school counseling supports and Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathways. Presenters reported that 15 high schools support about 3,200 CTE concentrators annually and that more than 7,400 students participate in CTE courses districtwide. The presentation also noted 2,458 students enrolled in at least one dual‑enrollment course last year, with 2,091 (about 85 percent) earning credit.
Board members asked how E4E and ACP services serve bilingual families and how parents can access student plans. District staff said families may create Xello accounts and that ACP conferences at grades 5, 7, 9 and 11 provide structured time for students and families to review plans.
Director Ferguson moved to approve the plan; the roll call showed aye votes from Director Ferguson, Director Reza and Chair Benoit and the motion passed.
The plan will remain subject to district implementation timelines, counselor staffing and ongoing family‑engagement activities described by staff during the presentation. The administration said it will return with follow‑up information as requested by the committee.
