Oak Lawn residents urge arts support and call for 'know your rights' statement amid reported ICE activity

During the Oct. 14 public-comment period at the Village of Oak Lawn meeting, two community speakers highlighted local arts programming and raised concerns about immigration enforcement.

Laura Cunningham, representing Acorn to Oak Studios, invited residents to the studio's 'Fresh Off the Easel' show and sale scheduled for Nov. 7–9 at the studio near 94th and 51st Avenue. "We invite you to stop by, enjoy some refreshments, meet our artists, and experience the incredible creativity happening at our studio," Cunningham said.

Separately, an Oak Lawn resident who did not state a full name said they had observed increased ICE activity and recounted a weekend arrest during which a man filming an arrest was taken into custody. The commenter said neighbors are fearful of leaving their homes and asked the village to issue a 'know your rights' statement and campaign similar to initiatives by Cook County and some Chicago suburbs. The speaker said Hispanic or Latino residents make up "nearly a quarter" of Oak Lawn's population and that "at least 17%" of the population is foreign-born; no official demographic source was cited during the meeting.

Ahmed, representing Power Home Remodeling, also addressed the board to request solicitor permits for a five-person team; he said the company's work includes windows, roofing and siding and that the firm offers free estimates by knocking on doors.

Trustees did not announce any immediate policy action in response to the immigration enforcement request during the public portion of the meeting; the comment was entered into the record for board consideration.
