Student advisory council outlines recruitment goals, seeks nonvoting board representation by February 2026

Lucina “Luna” Matos, vice president of the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council (SSAC) and an 11th‑grader at Rufus King International High School, and Ingrid Mauser, SSAC secretary and an 11th‑grader at the Milwaukee High School of the Arts, presented the council’s priorities and recruitment status to the Milwaukee Board of School Directors.
Matos said the SSAC’s recruitment goal is a minimum of two representatives from each of the district’s 25 high schools; the council had registered 57 representatives from 18 high schools at the time of the presentation and listed several schools without representation (Project Stay, Transition, North Division, Groppi, Vincent, Alliance, Hamilton). The students described priorities including improving school lunches, increasing attendance, strengthening school culture and climate, gender and identity inclusion, school safety protocols and SRO training, and a literacy plan previewed for the district.
The students said they are finalizing a drafted procedure under Administrative Policy 8.18 (student involvement and decision making) to select SSAC representatives to participate as nonvoting members on board committees. The SSAC officers and advisor told the board they expect to begin regular SSAC representation on the board and its committees by February 2026.
Board members praised the students’ work and encouraged continued engagement. Director Seemson and Director Ferguson both thanked SSAC members for their service and noted the value of student voice in district decision making.
Next steps: finalize the selection procedure, onboard SSAC representatives, and increase outreach to reach the goal of two representatives per high school.
