Danville Town backs moving ahead on playscape design ahead of Land and Water Conservation Fund application

Danville Town officials voted to advance a full design for a proposed playscape project so staff can pursue a Land and Water Conservation Fund grant.

At the meeting, Speaker 2 said meetings with DNR suggested the town “would be qualified for a land water conservation fund grant,” and presented a design estimate listing a lump-sum cost of $246,000. Speaker 2 told the group the fund’s maximum was cited as $1,000,000 and stressed the need to move the project forward so the town would be prepared if the grant opportunity opens.

The discussion focused on how the town would provide the local match and how payments would be scheduled. Speaker 2 noted that applicants often spend roughly 10–15% of local funds before receiving grant dollars and that towns frequently show early commitment to strengthen an application. Speaker 1 asked whether the dollars were already appropriated; Speaker 2 said the funds were available in savings but had not been budgeted this year and that formal appropriation and council approval would still be required.

Speaker 2 also cautioned that the Land and Water Conservation Fund requires committing project land to recreational use in perpetuity, saying, “You have to commit the land to be, like, forever used for recreation.” Board members discussed the implications of that requirement before the motion to move forward was made and approved by voice vote with no opposition recorded.

The board instructed Speaker 2 to take the design proposal and the board’s backing to the town council for formal consideration as the next step.

Next steps: staff will finalize the full design, clarify match and appropriation needs, and present the proposal and grant application request to the town council.
