Danville Town council reviews parks upgrades, playground funding request and maintenance projects

Unidentified Speaker 1 told the group they will ask the Town Council on July 2 for funds to move forward with a new playground design described in meeting materials as the "new place kit." The item will appear on the council's financial confirmation agenda, Speaker 1 said.
Speaker 1 described an active program to replace roughly 50 aging picnic tables across town parks, saying the new tables have been anchored to the ground to reduce theft and damage and to extend useful life by decades. "We started to switch them out," Speaker 1 said, noting work completed at Shelter 2 and the amphitheater area.
On utilities and lighting near the courts, Speaker 1 said crews plan to pothole and run new electrical lines and to replace an existing cast-iron water line with polyethylene piping, estimating about 600 feet of pipe work and indicating some trenching would be contracted out to "Swanson." The same area includes failed pickleball-court lights; Speaker 1 said the town is obtaining quotes and evaluating LED retrofits, mentioning contact with a vendor called Sports Beams that offers a retrofit for existing Musco Lighting fixtures.
Speaker 1 raised safety concerns about low-visibility cable bollards at Barnett Field and proposed switching to visible 6x4 wooden-post bollards and adding parking stops to reduce vehicle damage to town assets.
A request from Brent Pope to name Field 2 for Brent Taylor was discussed. Speaker 1 said Taylor has served roughly 35 years in Pee Wee programs but expressed reluctance to name a field currently in poor condition, and the council signaled it was premature to move forward now.
The items were presented as discussion and planning steps; no new funding was approved on-site and council members generally supported pursuing quotes and placing the playground-design request on the July 2 council agenda.
Next steps: staff will request playground-design funding at the July 2 meeting, obtain bids/quotes for electrical and bollard work, and return with firm cost estimates.
