Board reviews curriculum updates, Future Ready Index and Title IX policy changes

The Education Committee discussed several curriculum and assessment items Dec. 4, including changes to meet Pennsylvania Department of Education requirements and a broad district assessment briefing.
To comply with the PDE requirement that personal finance be a 0.5 credit, the district proposed increasing the financial-literacy course from 0.25 to 0.5 credit by combining 0.25 in-class instruction with 0.25 of asynchronous online work. Mr. Bond said the online portion will use a mix of district-designed modules and an adapted third-party platform (BusinessU) and that study halls or evening time could be used for completion. Board members supported the change and asked for details about assessment and delivery; staff said more information will follow when the item returns for approval.
Teachers and staff presented a modernization of the Earth and Space Science curriculum (previously labeled geo-environmental science) aligned to STEELS and next-generation standards. The redesign includes six units of about 15 days each, investigative phenomena, transfer tasks and options for ninth-grade honors courses. The art department proposed reclassifying three advanced art courses as honors-level credits without content changes; that item will be brought forward in two weeks for formal action.
Doctor Gojoy provided an overview of the Pennsylvania Future Ready Index and district trends: Carlisle’s proficiency rates are near or above state averages in some ELA and science measures but remain below the state average in math (Keystone Algebra and math PSSA). The district’s graduation rate moved from 89.1% to 88.2% year over year; staff noted the state did not publicly report science proficiency this year because the STEELS test was field-tested. Gojoy highlighted growth metrics, ELD performance patterns and career-readiness strengths at the high school and recommended follow-up deep dives on math instruction and NAEP context.
On governance, staff summarized updates to policies 103 and 104 to align with Title IX and recent statutory changes (including Pennsylvania Human Relations Act references and accommodations such as the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act). Administration said the updates primarily formalize language and contact information for the Title IX coordinator and do not change established practices; the redline versions were described as extensive but largely procedural.
Board members asked for further details and follow-up presentations on math interventions, program implementation and the mechanics of the financial-literacy asynchronous component before those items return for approval.
