Library board adopts new materials display policy and reconsideration procedure

The Nashville Public Library Board approved a new materials-display policy that standardizes how staff propose, approve and rotate physical and promotional displays across branches, and how staff respond to patron concerns.
Staff said the policy clarifies that proposed displays should be reviewed by a supervisor and given final approval at the division-manager level. The policy also establishes a process for patrons to raise concerns: staff will provide a packet explaining intellectual freedom and the library’s reconsideration procedure (based on American Library Association guidance), and a formal request-for-consideration form will be reviewed by collections staff and the director as appropriate.
A board member asked whether the policy ensures balanced perspectives for curated lists; staff said they aim to present well-rounded materials that represent community interests and that the reconsideration process will record responses to patrons. The board moved, seconded and adopted the policy by voice vote.
What happens next: staff will include the policy in the public-facing packet used to respond to patrons and implement the supervisory approval workflow across branches.
