Board members were briefed on workforce and administrative matters that the executive director and HR director said will expand regional training capacity.
David Matlock reported that the center secured roughly $629,000 to support a registered apprenticeship intermediary for Region 7 and introduced Jenny Nichols as the new hire to lead that effort. Matlock said about 1,200 apprentices exist statewide and that only about 4% are currently in Southwest Virginia, which the center plans to address through outreach. "She started to work yesterday," Matlock said of Jenny Nichols, adding the intermediary will coordinate apprenticeship growth in the region.
Adam Talbert, the HR and administration lead, provided staffing updates and compliance reminders: several full‑time hires and hourly staff have been onboarded, and he reminded board members that 2025 financial disclosure statements are due Monday, Feb. 2, 2026, and that citizen board members must complete biennial ethics training if not current.
Chair Senator Fafili presented the nominating committee appointees for June 2026 officer elections: Bear Lloyd as the citizen member, Delegate Jason Ballard as the legislative member and Donna Henry as the education member. The slate was presented to the board; the transcript does not record a roll‑call vote on that slate.
The board also approved the June 12, 2025 minutes by voice vote earlier in the meeting and took a procedural motion to adjourn at the end of the session.
Next steps: staff will proceed with apprenticeship outreach and report on progress at future meetings; HR will follow up with detailed instructions on filing disclosures and completing required training.
