The Canal Winchester Landmarks Commission on Nov. 24 approved application CA25.048 for 34 West Columbus Street with specific conditions restricting exterior changes.
Staff described the property (c. 1880 with a 1907 addition) and the applicant's request to install 25 white vinyl replacement windows in a four-over-four grid pattern. Commissioners examined photos and manufacturing details and raised concerns about grid patterns that sit between panes (SDL) and about wrapping or altering historic exterior trim.
After discussion the commission approved the application on the condition that the windows be one-over-one vinyl sash with a like-for-like light-for-light exchange and that grids between panes not be used. Commissioners also required that exterior trim remain unaltered; regarding a missing shutter on the front elevation, the commission said the applicant may replace it if an exact match is found, or else replace all four front shutters with wooden reproductions rather than installing vinyl shutters.
The motion carried on a roll-call vote. The approval allows the replacement windows and the shutter restoration plan only under the stated conditions; any alternative exterior trim or vinyl shutters would require a return to the commission.
