Commissioners move to appraise storage-unit property, exploring sale to fund jail project

Speaker 1 told the board he believes the county should "do away with storage units effective 01/01/2026" and redirect revenue toward jail construction. Commissioners discussed keeping the L-shaped building used by sheriff and staff while appraising the remaining four units. "Let's get them appraised," Speaker 1 said; Speaker 2 made the motion to appraise the four units and to split the parcel so Building 2 remains county property. The motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.
County staff were tasked with arranging a survey to define the split and returning with appraisal figures and legal recommendations at the commission’s next meeting. Commissioners noted some existing storage-unit funds are earmarked in the jail plan and staff will work to transfer those funds by year-end if possible.
Next steps: conduct a survey to define parcels, secure appraisals for the for-sale units, and bring formal RFP/offer options back to the board before any sale. Commissioners emphasized a desire to preserve the one unit for county operational needs.
