Residents urge safety fixes at busy intersection and park access; council swears in officials, reappoints board members and outlines December events

Public comments and community updates took much of the early evening at the Dec. 1 Oviedo City Council meeting.
Two residents spoke during public comment. Donald Terry, who lives on Silverweed Way, described repeated motorists failing to stop at the Doverra/Oviedo Mall Boulevard intersection and warned, "There's gonna be an accident," asking the council to review jurisdictional responsibility and enforcement. Lawrence Dannapolo urged the council to address the dirt access road at Sweetwater Park, saying he travels the road regularly and the potholes risk damaging vehicles.
Staff responded with operational updates: public-works staff said a restriping design is nearly complete for the Doverra intersection to reduce turn lanes and calm traffic; the council was also told bids for Magnolia Street repairs included resurfacing the Sweetwater Park entrance and that award of that contract is planned for the next council meeting.
Ceremony and appointments: Mayor Meghan Sladek and Deputy Mayor/council member Natalie Tukert each took the oath of office at the meeting; certificates of election were presented by the supervisor of elections and the city clerk. The council approved reappointments and appointments to local boards: David Deaver was reappointed to the Local Planning Agency, Jay Geddy and Ed Wiggins were reappointed to the Recreation & Parks Advisory Board, and a nominee (Mr. Reby) was selected to fill a vacated LPA seat.
Events and deadlines: City Manager Belden outlined holiday events — the annual tree lighting on Dec. 4 (lighting at 6:30 p.m.), a Winter Parade on Dec. 6 (7 p.m. start), WinterFest on Dec. 13 (10 a.m.–4 p.m.) and the Santa Run the following week — and reminded the council of a police awards banquet this Friday. Council members also noted a Dec. 6 deadline for charter review committee applications and encouraged public participation.
The meeting closed after brief council reports and announcements and the mayor read upcoming meeting dates.
