Oviedo to join Central Florida Pledge; council to adopt resolution in December

The Oviedo City Council on Dec. 1 discussed joining the Central Florida Pledge Business Network, a cross-sector initiative inviting organizations to commit to civility, inclusion and respectful discourse.
Joel Hunter, identified by staff as the pledge’s chairman, told council the network formed in response to a rise in antisemitic incidents and now includes government, law enforcement, education, nonprofits and businesses across Central Florida. “It started off with the alarm of the rise of antisemitism after the October,” he said, and described the pledge as "a positive, nonpolitical" commitment to civility.
Council members expressed support; staff said a resolution will be prepared for a December meeting so the mayor and all council members can sign it publicly. The city attorney and staff confirmed the resolution will be presented at a future meeting and that a small signing ceremony could be filmed for public visibility.
The resolution will return to the council for formal approval and signature at a scheduled December meeting, and staff will prepare the ceremonial language and a packet item for that agenda.
