Matthews board approves final design, $175,000 budget for Visitor Center Depot

Designers from Integra Designs and Zuma presented the final design package for the Matthews Visitor Center Depot on Dec. 8, outlining interpretive panels, artifact cases, interactive exhibits for children and a caboose experience.

Roger Ryman described the materials and maintenance choices for the exhibits, saying exterior panels were specified as phenolic resin that is graffiti resistant and “good for a solid 10 years plus,” and that interior panels would be direct‑printed on ACM/Sentra with some vinyl graphics for flexibility. The presentation emphasized interactive elements for children, a centerpiece mural and panels explaining the rail’s historical and modern role (including CSX freight operations).

Town staff reported a base fabrication estimate of about $140,000 and said the board should budget for contingency and construction‑administration costs. Commissioner Ken McCool moved to approve the final design and a budget amendment authorizing up to $175,000 from the tourism fund balance to complete construction services. The motion was seconded and passed unanimously.
