The Bloomington City Council unanimously adopted an ordinance amending Chapter 5 of the city code to raise the dollar threshold triggering council approval for municipal construction contracts from $100,000 to $175,000.
Maintenance Supervisor Tim Barrant told the council the change aligns city code with the purchasing policy and reflects inflation since the original $100,000 threshold was set in 1994. "What staff is recommending is that we change the amount from a $100,000 to a $175,000 which would align with the city's purchasing policy," Barrant said.
Staff explained the kinds of projects that typically fall in the $100,000'$175,000 range (sidewalk replacements, small mechanical replacements at parks, modest remodels) and said larger new construction and major remodels would exceed the new threshold and continue to come to council.
No members of the public spoke on this item. The ordinance amendment passed on a 7-0 vote.
