Anthony (staff) said the review covered several operations and included before‑and‑after aerials and photos. He said Dakota Aggregates’ lake had “expanded by 7 acres” and that the operator reported selling about 192,000 tons of recycled aggregate and more than 2,100,000 tons of material from the site in the past year. He said the North Mine lease expires in 2028, that the operator is reclaiming about 8 acres in that area, and that mining in parts of the site reaches depths “about 50 feet.”
On operations and impacts, Anthony told commissioners that the city had received “a couple of calls regarding the noise and vibration overnight” related to one operator; he said the operator holds a permit that allows overnight work while they were stripping and preparing areas for mining. Staff said that stripping work in one area would be completed on Dec. 5 and that activity would be quieter afterwards.
Anthony reviewed other sites: the Shaffer mine (limited current activity but progressing in a northwest portion), Max Steininger’s pit (used by a construction company for its own projects; little year‑to‑year change), and Bolander (activity concentrated in a southeast corner with most of the area reclaimed). He said staff received no police concerns for Schaefer/Shaffer, Steininger or Bolander operations.
Staff told commissioners they will return next year with detailed reports when each operation comes up for renewal under the two‑year cycle.
