"This is draft language," a district staff member stated while walking the board through the proposal. The draft in the meeting groups incidents into three categories used for state reporting: "physical aggression without injury, with injury, [and] serious bodily injury," and it reverses the district's level numbering so that Level 1 represents the most egregious conduct, matching current district practice.
The staff member said administrators expect staff to report injuries to the school nurse immediately, who in turn will log the incident and work with human resources; only when a staff member seeks urgent care or hospitalization would an incident be classified under the "serious bodily injury" label for state reporting.
Board members asked how medical decisions would be made if a staff member declines care. One board member said nurses have been proactive in documenting and following up on injuries; another emphasized the district's restorative-entry practices when students return after a suspension.
Director Easton and other board members discussed student-to-student violence and district responses. One speaker said the district's online-learning slowdown mechanism introduced after COVID has been an "effective deterrent for student to student violence and repeated fights." That comment was offered as one of several tools the district uses; staff noted disciplinary days, reentry expectations and an appeal process remain part of the system.
District staff said the draft CBA language and related policy changes will be packaged and presented to the Policy & Governance (P & G) committee for formal review next month, and they plan to include anonymized incident case studies to show how decision-making maps to the proposed levels without identifying students.
No formal policy vote was taken at the work session.
